***** Society News & Information *****

A nice sized crowd braved the winter weather to attend our January meeting and learn a little about the Battle of Scary Creek. Society member Mark Perkins discussed the campaign which culminated in the July 17, 1861, battle in the Kanawha Valley, western Virginia. Ohio General Jacob Cox led a force which included Charles Cotter's artillery battery from Portage County against a Confederate force led by Lt. Colonel George S. Patton. The Confederate victory at Scary Creek slowed, but did not halt, Cox's advance up the valley.

At the January meeting the possibility of changing the society's schedule to no longer meet in January and February due to the typically less friendly weather and the possibility of last minute weather cancellations was raised. Such a change would also lessen the burden of finding speakers to fill the year's schedule. Society members are asked to share their opinion on such a change at future meetings or email us at info@kentcivilwar.org . Expect the issue to be discussed at future meetings.

The society has raised enough contributions to make a preservation donation. Expect a vote on a target for sending a donation at the February meeting.

Suggestions for preservation donation targets can be given to Mark Perkins at the meetings or email us at info@kentcivilwar.org .

Speakers from within the society will be needed to fill out the 2025 schedule, so if you have something you can give a presentation on, or you want a reason to do some research, please let the society president Brian Conrad know or email us at info@kentcivilwar.org
